The Jet Pioneer – April 22nd

This promises to be a fascinating evening.

Crofton Beam Engines in conjunction with the Kennet Valley Hall is very pleased to have the opportunity invite you to an evening talk to hear about the pioneering engineer Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the modern jet engine. We all take it for granted that flying in jet aircraft for a holiday is quite normal and give little thought to the engineering talent that, despite everything that the government of the time could do to hold back progress, lead to the invention of the modern jet engine and a revolution in air travel.

On Wednesday 22nd April at 7.30pm aviation documentary producer Nicholas Jones will be talking about Sir Frank Whittle and the development of the jet engine. The talk will be illustrated by many film segments interviewing Sir Frank and shots of the engineering in development and flight. We are very fortunate to have Nicholas presenting this talk the seeds of which go back to an original documentary project in 1997. Nicholas commented that in 2004 listeners to local radio stations in the BBC West region voted Whittle their choice in a ‘local hero’ competition. Nicholas was then based between Chippenham and Malmesbury and got wind of this contest. It became the catalyst for him to make a new documentary, which lies at the heart of a talk Nicholas is giving on Wednesday April 22nd at the Kennet Valley Hall.
