A non-steaming day offers a unique and equally enriching experience.
Crofton Beam Engines on a non-steaming day offers a unique and equally enriching experience. The tranquillity of the setting, combined with the historical significance and intricate mechanics of the beam engines, provides a captivating journey through time.
On non-steaming days, visitors have the opportunity to admire the beam engines in a state of serene dormancy. The polished brass and iron components glisten under the gentle light, revealing the meticulous care taken to preserve these mechanical marvels.

One of the highlights of visiting Crofton on a non-steaming day is the availability of our knowledgeable volunteers with a deep passion for industrial heritage, who can help explain to visitors the history and functionality of the beam engines. They offer a wealth of information, from the engineering principles behind the engines to the stories of the people who operated and maintained them.
The Crofton site is not limited to the Engine House alone. The surrounding grounds are steeped in historical significance including the approximately 26 metre (86ft) tall chimney. It dates back to 1856 and was shortened in 1959 due to instability, it was restored to its original height in 1996. The chimney is listed. It’s recognized for its special architectural and historic interest. The chimney is built in the Victorian industrial architectural style.

After exploring the beam engines, the surrounding countryside beckons with its tranquil beauty and scenic walking routes. The area around Crofton boasts a network of footpaths and trails that cater to walkers of all abilities.

A stroll around Wilton Water and along the canal path is a must for visitors. The serene waterway, flanked by lush greenery, offers a peaceful ambiance that contrasts with the industrial might of the beam engines. The route provides insights into the canal’s construction, its importance in the 19th century, and the wildlife that now thrives in this restored habitat.

The journey to Wilton Windmill is a delightful experience in itself, but the windmill is the crowning jewel of this excursion. Built in 1821, the windmill is a testament to the ingenuity of early industrial architecture. It stands proudly atop a hill, with its sails turning gracefully in the breeze.
