Heritage Open Day 2025

Crofton Beam Engines Heritage Open Day September 14th 2025

Free entry to Crofton Beam Engines to celebrate Heritage Open Day. Our engines will be resting but you can join one of our guided tours to learn more about them and this fascinating site, the history of Crofton and its importance for the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Though the Station will not be in steam, visitors have the opportunity to join a one-hour tour throughout the Station, led by dedicated knowledgeable volunteers, to learn the fascinating history and engineering of the site. During your tour look out for items on our “I Spy” trail that are hidden around the Station and grounds.

Throughout the day we will be running children’s activities in the Side Boiler House following this year’s theme of Transport, Networks and Connections. Create lolly stick pictures linked to the Stations long transport history including canal boats, trucks, trains and helicopters!

Have fun lifting water with our model water lifting engines, find out how water has been lifted through the ages. Or put on your engineering hats and build a mini working model of the Station – a workshop for the whole family. Free though donations are appreciated.

Our Smithy Tea Room will be open for the day serving a mix of hot and cold drinks and light refreshments. We encourage visitors to make use of our picnic benches in the grounds to enjoy a picnic or just sit and soak up the atmosphere.
