First Stage of Mechatronics Instrumentation Project is a Great Success!

Mechatronics is a unique project to investigate how modern technology can improve our knowledge of the two-hundred-year-old engineering technology that works at Crofton Beam Engines, working in partnership with a team from AWE at Aldermaston.

The image here shows the AWE team at Crofton at the successful conclusion of the instrumentation project on our #1 engine. The diagram on screen represents a high precision P-V diagram which will help Crofton’s engineering staff monitor the working of our heritage engine. This is the first stage of a 5 year project to instrument the boiler and engine installations to help increase understanding and provide important diagnostic information for both Crofton and external academic research. Although our James Watt designed engine continues after 200 and more years of work to do the job it was designed for, this instrumentation will provide an insight into the engines operation that has not been seen before. A world first for Crofton!
